The art of stillness
Savasana is the art of conscious surrender doing less and being more. Savasana, or “Corpse Pose" benefits extend far beyond the yoga mat.
Whilst we think it is the easiest posture to get into towards the end of our yoga practice, it also presents some challenges. Savasana requires a powerful discipline to seemingly practice stillness in mind and body. When we enter a state of Savasana, our nervous system shifts from “flight-or-flight” to “rest-and digest” mode activating the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The science backs this stillness with benefits including:
Lowers blood pressure and heart rate
Reduces cortisol (stress hormone) levels
Releases tension in muscles helping them to relax
Improves immune function
This intentional practice of stillness makes us more effective when we return to action providing mental clarity and space, helping to recharge our mental and physical batteries. It is a practice of deepening our connection with present moment awareness and finding peace amidst chaos.
In yoga classes I refer to our postures as transferable from our mat to daily life. The beauty of Savasana is that it does not require a yoga class. You can incorporate mini moments of stillness by:
Taking a few mindful conscious breaths before responding to a stressful situation internally or externally
Scheduling short “stillness breaks” throughout your day
Giving yourself permission to slow down
In a world where we are surrounded by noise and constant motion, embracing stillness might be the revolutionary action of self-care you can practice.
“Practicing moments of stillness offers the perfect counter pose for a busy life”
